Chase Sapphire Reserve: ultimate travel card
Last reviewed: September 2026. Credit card rewards, fees, statement credits, travel benefits and promotional offers may change. Always review Chase's current terms and Guide to Benefits before applying or relying on a specific feature.
The Chase Sapphire Reserve® is a premium travel rewards credit card that combines accelerated travel rewards with airport lounge access, statement credits and a broad range of travel protections.
The card was substantially updated before this review, so several features commonly associated with earlier versions of Sapphire Reserve — including its previous rewards structure and fixed Chase Travel redemption rate — no longer reflect the current program.
Current Sapphire Reserve rewards structure
According to Chase's current terms, Sapphire Reserve cardholders earn:
- 8X points: eligible purchases made through Chase Travel;
- 4X points: flights booked directly with airlines;
- 4X points: hotels booked directly with hotels;
- 3X points: eligible dining purchases worldwide, including qualifying takeout and delivery;
- 1X point: other eligible purchases.
Purchases that qualify for certain statement credits, including the $300 annual travel credit and eligible The Edit credits, may not earn points on the credited amount.
For more information about earning and redeeming points, see Maximizing Sapphire Reserve points.
$300 annual travel credit
Sapphire Reserve currently provides up to $300 in automatic statement credits each account anniversary year for eligible purchases in Chase's travel category.
Eligible travel can include categories such as airlines, hotels, car rental agencies, cruise lines, passenger transportation and certain other travel merchants, subject to how the transaction is coded.
The portion of a purchase reimbursed by the annual travel credit does not earn rewards points.
Airport lounge access
Eligible Sapphire Reserve cardholders currently receive complimentary access to Chase Sapphire Lounges by The Club and a complimentary Priority Pass™ Select membership providing access to more than 1,300 participating airport lounges worldwide.
Eligible primary cardmembers and authorized users can currently bring up to two complimentary guests to participating Priority Pass lounges, subject to individual lounge capacity, access rules and terms.
The Reserve lounge network also currently includes access to select Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounges and Air Canada Cafés when applicable requirements are met.
The Edit hotel benefits and credits
Sapphire Reserve cardholders currently have access to The Edit by Chase Travel, a collection of participating hotels and resorts.
Eligible The Edit stays can include benefits such as daily breakfast for two, a property credit, welcome amenities and room upgrades when available.
Beginning in 2026, Sapphire Reserve provides up to $500 per calendar year in automatic statement credits for qualifying prepaid The Edit stays, with a maximum credit of $250 per eligible booking and a two-night minimum requirement.
For more information about additional features, see Exclusive benefits of Sapphire Reserve.
Sapphire Reserve Exclusive Tables dining credit
The card currently provides up to $300 in annual statement credits for qualifying purchases at restaurants participating in the Sapphire Reserve Exclusive Tables program through OpenTable.
The current structure provides up to $150 in eligible credits from January through June and another $150 from July through December.
Only qualifying restaurants and transactions receive the credit, so cardholders should confirm current participating locations before relying on the benefit.
Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or NEXUS credit
Sapphire Reserve currently provides one statement credit of up to $120 every four years toward an eligible Global Entry, TSA PreCheck® or NEXUS application fee charged to the card.
Approval for these programs is determined by the applicable government agency rather than by Chase.
Points Boost and the transition rules for eligible legacy points
A fixed 1.5-cent value is no longer the general Chase Travel redemption rule. A transition exception applies to Sapphire Reserve cardmembers who applied before June 23, 2025: points earned before October 26, 2025 remain eligible for 1.5X redemption through Chase Travel until October 26, 2027. For these points, Chase applies the higher eligible value between 1.5X and Points Boost.
Under the current program, Ultimate Rewards points have a standard Chase Travel redemption value and selected hotels and flights may qualify for Points Boost.
Eligible Sapphire Reserve Points Boost offers can currently provide up to twice the standard point value on selected top-booked hotels and premium-cabin flights with participating airlines.
Points Boost availability varies and should not be described as applying to every Chase Travel reservation.
Transfers to airline and hotel programs
Eligible Ultimate Rewards points can be transferred to participating airline and hotel loyalty programs.
Transfer ratios, availability and loyalty program terms can change. Because transfers are generally final, cardholders should verify the current ratio and award availability before moving points to another program.
Travel protection benefits
Sapphire Reserve includes a broad range of specific travel protections, subject to eligibility requirements, coverage limits and exclusions.
- Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance: currently up to $10,000 per covered traveler and $20,000 per eligible trip;
- Trip Delay Reimbursement: up to $500 per covered traveler when eligible common-carrier travel is delayed more than six hours or requires an overnight stay;
- Baggage Delay Insurance: up to $100 per day for up to five days when eligible baggage is delayed more than six hours;
- Auto Rental Coverage: primary coverage of up to $75,000 for qualifying theft or collision damage on eligible rentals;
- Travel Accident Insurance: up to $1,000,000 for qualifying accidental death or dismemberment coverage;
- Emergency Evacuation and Transportation: up to $100,000 for qualifying covered medical services and transportation.
These benefits should not be described as unlimited or comprehensive travel insurance. The current Guide to Benefits determines whether a particular event or expense is covered.
No foreign transaction fees
Chase currently does not charge foreign transaction fees on Sapphire Reserve purchases.
This does not eliminate other potential costs related to international travel, including merchant currency conversion practices and other travel expenses.
Reserve versus Sapphire Preferred
The Reserve and Sapphire Preferred have different fee structures, reward categories and travel benefits.
Sapphire Reserve currently has a $795 annual fee and emphasizes premium travel benefits, lounge access and statement credits. Sapphire Preferred currently has a $95 annual fee and offers a broader set of everyday accelerated reward categories.
Neither structure is automatically more appropriate for every consumer. The relevant comparison depends on expected spending, travel patterns and actual use of each card's benefits.
