Maximizing U.S. Bank Visa benefits

Last reviewed: September 2026. The U.S. Bank Visa® Platinum Card is no longer accepting new applications. This guide is intended primarily for existing cardholders.

The U.S. Bank Visa Platinum is not a cash-back or travel rewards card. For existing cardholders, using the account effectively therefore involves understanding the applicable APR, account terms and cardholder protections rather than attempting to maximize points or miles.

Confirm the terms applicable to your individual account

Because the Visa Platinum is no longer available for new applications, older online advertisements should not be used to determine the APR or promotional period on an existing account.

Existing cardholders can review the monthly statement and Cardmember Agreement to confirm the applicable purchase APR, balance transfer APR, fees and any active promotional terms.

If a promotional APR remains active, track its expiration date

Some existing cardholders may still have account-specific promotional financing.

If a promotional APR applies, the statement can be used to verify its expiration date. Paying down the balance before that date can reduce the amount that becomes subject to the standard APR afterward.

The required minimum monthly payment may not be enough to eliminate the full balance before a promotional period ends.

Use Cell Phone Protection according to its requirements

One benefit that U.S. Bank continues to document specifically for eligible Visa Platinum cardholders is Cellular Telephone Protection.

The current benefit can reimburse up to $600 per covered occurrence for qualifying damage, theft, or involuntary and accidental parting of an eligible cell phone.

A $25 deductible applies per approved claim, and the current maximum is $1,200 across up to two paid claims during a 12-month period.

For coverage to apply, the monthly cellular telephone bill generally must be charged to the eligible Visa Platinum Card during the calendar month before the covered event.

Lost phones, electronic failure and certain other events are excluded under the current benefit terms.

Do not look for cash-back categories that do not exist

The Visa Platinum's final public offer did not include a traditional rewards program.

Existing cardholders should therefore not expect rotating cash-back categories, travel points, rewards portals or airline and hotel transfer partners simply because other U.S. Bank cards offer those features.

Review foreign transaction costs before international use

International use should be evaluated according to the specific Cardmember Agreement.

U.S. Bank currently notes that credit card foreign transaction fees can be as high as 3%, depending on the card's terms.

The Visa Platinum should therefore not be described as providing no foreign transaction fees unless that is confirmed in the individual account agreement.

Monitor account activity and payment settings

Existing cardholders can use U.S. Bank online banking and the mobile app to monitor account activity, review statements and manage payment settings.

Automatic payments can help reduce the risk of missing a due date, although cardholders should continue monitoring the account to confirm that scheduled payments are processed correctly.

Consider whether the account still fits its intended use

A legacy credit card may continue to serve a useful role even after applications close, but its usefulness depends on the individual account terms and the cardholder's current needs.

For example, a consumer primarily interested in rewards may evaluate the account differently from someone focused on preserving an existing credit line or using documented cardholder protections.

Closing or changing a long-standing credit account can also affect a credit profile in different ways, so account changes should be evaluated according to the consumer's broader circumstances.

Frequently asked questions

Can existing Visa Platinum cardholders still use their cards?

The fact that U.S. Bank no longer accepts new applications does not by itself mean an existing account has been closed. Existing cardholders should refer to communications from U.S. Bank and their current account status.

Does Visa Platinum offer cash back?

The final publicly available U.S. Bank Visa Platinum offer did not include a traditional cash-back or points rewards program.

What benefit does U.S. Bank still document for the Visa Platinum?

U.S. Bank currently documents Cellular Telephone Protection for eligible Visa Platinum cardholders, subject to the applicable coverage requirements and exclusions.

Final considerations

For existing U.S. Bank Visa Platinum cardholders, maximizing the account is primarily about understanding its financing terms, using documented protections when relevant and managing the account carefully.

The card should not be presented as a current rewards, lounge or premium travel product.
