Freedom Flex vs. other Chase cards
Last reviewed: September 22, 2026. Chase rewards, fees and benefits can change. Review the current terms for each card before making a comparison.
The Chase Freedom Flex® combines rotating cash-back categories with fixed rewards on dining, drugstores and Chase Travel. Other Chase credit cards use different reward structures, annual fees and travel benefits.
Rather than treating one card as universally better, consumers can compare the categories they use most often, annual fees and the benefits relevant to their spending patterns.
Freedom Flex at a glance
- $0 annual fee;
- 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in activated quarterly bonus categories;
- 5% on eligible Chase Travel purchases;
- 3% on eligible dining;
- 3% on eligible drugstore purchases;
- 1% on other eligible purchases;

- Cell Phone Protection and additional purchase and travel protections.
Freedom Flex vs. Freedom Unlimited
Freedom Unlimited® and Freedom Flex currently share several fixed reward categories.
Both currently earn 5% on eligible Chase Travel purchases and 3% on eligible dining and drugstore purchases.
The main earning difference is outside those categories. Freedom Unlimited currently earns at least 1.5% on other eligible purchases, while Freedom Flex generally earns 1% but adds its rotating 5% quarterly categories after activation.
Consumers who prefer a consistent base earning rate may evaluate that differently from consumers whose spending frequently aligns with the Freedom Flex quarterly categories.
Freedom Flex vs. Sapphire Preferred
Chase Sapphire Preferred® currently has a $95 annual fee and uses an Ultimate Rewards points structure focused on both travel and everyday bonus categories.
Current Sapphire Preferred earning categories include 5X on eligible Chase Travel purchases, 3X on dining, eligible gas stations and EV charging, eligible vacation homes, top streaming services and qualifying online grocery purchases, 2X on other eligible travel and 1X on other purchases.
Preferred also provides access to airline and hotel transfer partners and several travel benefits that differ from the Freedom Flex package.
Freedom Flex has no annual fee and uses rotating 5% cash-back categories, while Sapphire Preferred charges an annual fee and offers a different combination of travel redemption and transfer options.
Freedom Flex vs. Sapphire Reserve
Chase Sapphire Reserve® is currently a premium travel card with a $795 annual fee.
Its current earning structure includes 8X points through Chase Travel, 4X on eligible flights booked directly, 4X on eligible hotels booked directly, 3X on dining and 1X on other eligible purchases.
Reserve also includes premium travel features such as Chase Sapphire Lounge and Priority Pass access, statement credits and expanded travel protections.
The substantial difference in annual fees means that these products address different combinations of rewards and benefits. Lounge access or premium travel credits should not be assumed to be Freedom Flex benefits.
Travel protection is not exclusive to Sapphire cards
Freedom Flex also includes several travel-related benefits under its current Guide to Benefits.
These currently include Auto Rental Coverage, Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance and Travel and Emergency Assistance Services, subject to the applicable terms.
The coverage levels and types of protection are not necessarily the same as those provided by Sapphire Preferred or Sapphire Reserve.
Cell Phone Protection
Freedom Flex currently includes Cell Phone Protection of up to $800 per approved claim and up to $1,000 per 12-month period for qualifying covered theft or damage.
A $50 deductible and a maximum of two paid claims per 12-month period currently apply.
International purchases
Effective September 21, 2026, Freedom Flex no longer charges a foreign transaction fee under Chase's current terms.
This is a recent change and older comparisons that list a Freedom Flex foreign transaction fee are now outdated.

Broad complimentary airport lounge membership is not currently listed as a standard Freedom Flex benefit.
Can Freedom Flex rewards be combined with other Chase Ultimate Rewards points?
