Earning with Freedom Flex

Last reviewed: September 22, 2026. Chase may change reward categories, welcome offers, redemption options and card benefits. Review the current Rewards Program Agreement for the latest terms.

The Chase Freedom Flex® earns cash-back rewards through a combination of rotating quarterly categories and permanent earning categories.

Although Chase describes the rewards as cash back, they are tracked within the Ultimate Rewards® program as points. Under the standard Freedom rewards structure, 100 points are equivalent to $1 in cash-back rewards.

5% cash back in activated quarterly categories

The Freedom Flex currently earns 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined eligible purchases in rotating quarterly categories after activation.

The categories change each quarter. Cardholders should confirm the current calendar and activate the offer instead of assuming that a category available in a previous year will return.

Because the $1,500 limit is shared across the quarter's bonus categories, purchases across multiple categories count toward the same combined cap.

5% cash back through Chase Travel

Eligible travel purchased through Chase Travel currently earns 5% cash back.

A higher rewards rate does not necessarily mean that a Chase Travel booking will always provide the lowest total travel cost. Consumers can also compare prices, cancellation policies, loyalty program treatment and booking conditions before choosing where to book.

3% cash back on dining

Freedom Flex currently earns 3% cash back on eligible dining purchases, including qualifying takeout and delivery services.

Merchant classification determines whether a transaction qualifies. Purchases of food from merchants classified primarily as grocery stores, entertainment venues or other business types may not qualify as dining.

3% cash back at drugstores

Eligible drugstore purchases currently earn 3% cash back.

As with other reward categories, eligibility depends on the merchant category information submitted with the transaction.

1% on other eligible purchases

Eligible purchases that do not receive one of the accelerated reward rates generally earn 1% cash back.

Balance transfers, cash advances, fees, interest and certain cash-equivalent or excluded transactions do not earn rewards under the current Rewards Program Agreement.

Bonus categories can sometimes overlap

In some quarters, a rotating 5% category may overlap with one of the card's permanent bonus categories.

For example, dining is one of the Q4 2026 rotating categories while also being a standard 3% Freedom Flex category.

Chase currently states that eligible dining purchases during Q4 2026 can earn up to 7% total cash back after activation and while the applicable quarterly spending limit remains available.

The exact result when promotions overlap depends on the terms of the applicable offers, so cardholders should not assume that every future overlapping category will stack in the same way.

Points Boost adds another redemption option

Beginning September 21, 2026, eligible Freedom cardmembers can receive selected Points Boost offers on hotel bookings through Chase Travel.

Freedom points normally redeem through Chase Travel at a standard value of $0.01 per point. Current Points Boost promotions can increase that value by up to 10% on selected participating hotel bookings.

For example, 100 points normally represent $1 in Chase Travel value under the standard Freedom structure, while a qualifying maximum Points Boost offer could provide up to $1.10 in value.

Points Boost offers rotate and are subject to availability.

Combining eligible Chase points

Chase currently allows eligible Ultimate Rewards points to be moved between qualifying Chase cards belonging to the same cardholder.

Under current household rules, points may also be combined with one eligible household member who shares the same address.

This can be relevant for consumers who hold another Ultimate Rewards card with different redemption or transfer features. Program restrictions apply, and moving points does not guarantee that a particular redemption will provide greater value.

Current welcome offer

As of September 22, 2026, Chase is advertising a limited-time offer of $250 after an eligible new cardmember spends $500 on qualifying purchases within the first three months after account opening.

Welcome offers are temporary, can vary by marketing channel and are subject to eligibility restrictions. The offer displayed by Chase at the time of application should be verified before applying.

Rewards do not expire while the account remains open

Freedom Flex cash-back rewards currently do not expire while the account remains open, subject to the Ultimate Rewards Program Agreement.

Chase also currently has no minimum amount required for a cash-back redemption.

Consider interest costs before focusing on rewards

Cash-back rates should be evaluated alongside any interest that may be charged on an unpaid credit card balance.

Interest costs can exceed the amount earned in rewards. Increasing spending solely to earn a higher percentage of cash back can therefore reduce the financial benefit of the rewards program.

Using bonus categories for purchases already included in a normal budget provides a different financial outcome than making additional purchases solely to reach a rewards threshold.

Cardholder protections can add features beyond cash back

Freedom Flex currently includes Cell Phone Protection, Purchase Protection, Extended Warranty Protection, Auto Rental Coverage and Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance when the applicable requirements are met.

These benefits are separate from the rewards program and should be evaluated according to their own eligibility rules, limits and exclusions.

Final considerations

Earning with Freedom Flex depends on understanding both the permanent cash-back categories and the rotating quarterly calendar.

Activation, merchant classification and the quarterly spending cap determine how much an eligible transaction can earn.

The recent addition of Points Boost and removal of foreign transaction fees have also changed how the card can be evaluated for travel-related use.
