The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card combines a straightforward miles-earning structure with several ways to redeem rewards for travel and other eligible options.
Cardholders currently earn unlimited 2X miles per dollar on eligible everyday purchases and 5X miles on eligible hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel.
This guide explains the current rewards structure, redemption options, travel features and important costs to consider when evaluating the Venture Rewards Card.
Capital One Venture Rewards at a glance
According to Capital One's current published terms, the Venture Rewards Card includes the following core features:
- Annual fee: $95;
- Everyday purchases: unlimited 2X miles per dollar on eligible purchases;
- Capital One Travel: 5X miles on eligible hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel;
- Foreign transaction fee: none under current Capital One terms;
- Global Entry or TSA PreCheck®: up to a $120 statement credit on an eligible application fee;
- Transfer partners: access to more than 15 participating airline and hotel loyalty programs;
- Rewards expiration: miles do not expire while the account remains open and in good standing, subject to program terms.
The applicable purchase APR and other credit terms depend on the account and should be reviewed directly through Capital One.
How Venture Rewards miles are earned
The Venture Rewards Card currently earns unlimited 2 miles per dollar on eligible purchases, regardless of whether the purchase falls into a standard everyday spending category such as groceries, dining or general retail.
This flat-rate structure can make rewards easier to track than programs that require cardholders to activate quarterly categories or remember several different everyday earning rates.
However, other rewards cards may offer higher earning rates in particular categories. Consumers may therefore want to compare their normal spending patterns rather than assuming a flat 2X rate will always produce the most rewards.
Earning 5X miles through Capital One Travel
Venture cardholders currently earn 5X miles per dollar on eligible hotel, vacation rental and rental car bookings made through Capital One Travel.
The 5X rate does not automatically apply to every travel purchase. Flights and travel booked directly with airlines, hotels, rental companies or other providers generally earn according to the card's standard rewards structure unless another current promotion applies.
Before using a travel portal solely to earn additional miles, consumers may also want to compare the total price, cancellation rules, loyalty program eligibility and booking conditions available through the travel provider directly.
Current welcome offer
As of this review, Capital One is advertising a limited-time welcome offer for eligible new Venture primary cardholders.
The current offer includes 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 on qualifying purchases within the first three months after account opening. Capital One is also advertising a one-time $300 Capital One Travel Stays credit for eligible hotel and vacation rental bookings made through Capital One Travel during the first cardholder year.
Welcome offers are promotional and can change or disappear. Eligibility restrictions also apply, including restrictions related to previously received Venture or Venture X new-cardmember bonuses. Consumers should verify the offer displayed directly by Capital One before applying.
Do Venture miles expire?
Capital One currently states that Venture rewards miles do not expire while the account remains open and in good standing, and there is no standard limit on the number of miles that can be earned.
Unredeemed rewards may be lost in circumstances described by Capital One, such as when an account is closed or is no longer active or in good standing. Cardholders should review the current rewards agreement for complete details.
Ways to redeem Venture miles
Venture miles currently have several redemption options. The value received can vary depending on how the miles are used.
- Book eligible travel through Capital One Travel;
- Cover qualifying recent travel purchases;
- Transfer miles to participating airline and hotel loyalty programs;
- Redeem miles for gift cards;
- Redeem miles for cash back;
- Use miles for eligible Amazon.com or PayPal purchases;
- Use miles toward eligible tickets and experiences through Capital One Entertainment.
Because redemption rates can differ, cardholders may want to compare the value of available options before using a large rewards balance.
Covering recent travel purchases with miles
Capital One currently allows eligible Venture miles to be used toward qualifying recent travel purchases charged to the card.
Eligible travel purchases can currently be covered with miles within 90 days of the transaction. This can provide flexibility for travelers who prefer to book directly with an airline, hotel or another eligible travel provider rather than exclusively through Capital One Travel.
Transaction eligibility and redemption rates are determined by the current Capital One rewards terms.
Transferring miles to airline and hotel programs
Eligible Venture miles can currently be transferred to more than 15 participating airline and hotel loyalty programs.
Transfer ratios vary by partner. Some programs currently use a 1:1 conversion ratio, while others use different ratios.
Transfers should be evaluated before they are completed. Once rewards are transferred, the receiving loyalty program's rules generally determine their value, expiration and redemption availability, and completed transfers may not be reversible.
A transfer can provide useful redemption options in some circumstances, but it should not be assumed to produce greater value in every situation.
No foreign transaction fees
Capital One currently does not charge foreign transaction fees on Venture Rewards purchases made outside the United States.
This can be relevant for international spending, although other costs may still affect transactions abroad. Merchant currency conversion practices, exchange rates and other travel-related expenses should be considered separately.
Global Entry or TSA PreCheck® credit
The Venture Rewards Card currently includes up to a $120 statement credit toward an eligible Global Entry or TSA PreCheck® application fee.
The qualifying application fee must be charged to the eligible Venture account. Capital One currently makes this benefit available periodically according to the terms of the program.
Capital One does not determine whether an applicant is approved for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck. Enrollment and approval are handled by the applicable government agencies.
Lifestyle Collection benefits
Eligible Venture cardholders currently have access to Capital One's Lifestyle Collection of hotels, resorts and professionally managed vacation rentals.
Qualifying Lifestyle Collection bookings currently include a $50 experience credit. Depending on the property and availability, additional benefits may include complimentary Wi-Fi, room upgrades, early check-in or late checkout.
These benefits apply only to qualifying Lifestyle Collection bookings and should not be interpreted as benefits available at every hotel or vacation rental.
Hertz Five Star status
Eligible Venture cardholders currently receive complimentary Hertz® Five Star status, subject to enrollment and Hertz program terms.
Current benefits may include access to a wider vehicle selection and the ability to bypass certain rental counter procedures at participating locations.
Availability and specific rental benefits depend on Hertz program rules, participating locations and reservation conditions.
Travel accident insurance
Capital One currently lists travel accident insurance as a Venture cardholder benefit.
Coverage may apply to certain covered losses when qualifying passenger transportation fares are purchased with the eligible card.
This benefit is not the same as comprehensive travel or medical insurance. Coverage events, limits, eligibility requirements and exclusions are defined in the applicable Cardholder Benefits Guide.
Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver
The Venture Rewards Card currently includes an Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver for eligible rental vehicles when applicable requirements are met.
This benefit may provide coverage for eligible damage caused by collision or theft when the rental is paid for with the covered card and other benefit requirements are satisfied.
Coverage should not be interpreted as comprehensive automobile insurance. Terms, exclusions and coverage limits vary and should be reviewed in the current Cardholder Benefits Guide.
Extended warranty protection
Eligible Venture accounts may also include extended warranty protection on qualifying purchases.
This type of benefit can extend the manufacturer's warranty on eligible items purchased with a covered card. The duration of additional coverage, reimbursement limits and exclusions depend on the specific Cardholder Benefits Guide associated with the account.
Because Capital One cards can operate on different payment networks with different benefit packages, cardholders should verify the benefit guide applicable to their specific card before relying on extended warranty protection.
Security and account management
Capital One provides several account management and security features for Venture cardholders.
Current features include security alerts for potentially suspicious transactions, virtual card numbers for eligible online purchases, card locking through the Capital One Mobile app and $0 fraud liability for qualifying unauthorized charges.
Capital One's Eno® assistant may also provide account notifications, including alerts about potential duplicate charges or unusual activity.
Consider the $95 annual fee
The Venture Rewards Card currently charges a $95 annual fee.
Consumers evaluating the card can compare the value they expect to receive from miles and cardholder benefits with this recurring cost.
A traveler who regularly uses transfer partners, Capital One Travel or other included benefits may evaluate the fee differently from someone who rarely travels. The appropriate comparison depends on individual spending and redemption habits.
Interest can outweigh rewards
Miles earned from purchases should be considered alongside the cost of carrying a credit card balance.
Interest charges can exceed the value of rewards earned, particularly when balances remain unpaid for extended periods. Consumers should review the applicable APR and their ability to repay purchases rather than increasing spending solely to accumulate miles.
Using a rewards card for purchases already included in a normal budget can help separate rewards earning from unnecessary additional spending.
