Maximizing Sapphire Reserve points

Last reviewed: September 2026. Rewards categories, redemption values, transfer partners and promotional offers may change. Review the current Ultimate Rewards Program Agreement before making decisions based on a particular points value.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® currently earns Ultimate Rewards® points across travel, dining and other eligible purchases. Using the card effectively begins with understanding the current earning structure rather than relying on older reward rates.

Chase now uses Points Boost offers on selected hotels and flights, while eligible legacy points retain a fixed redemption option under the transition rules explained below.

Understand the current earning categories

Sapphire Reserve currently earns:

  • 8X points on eligible purchases made through Chase Travel;
  • 4X points on eligible flights booked directly with airlines;
  • 4X points on eligible hotels booked directly;
  • 3X points on eligible dining purchases worldwide;
  • 1X point on other eligible purchases.

This means the old recommendation to use the card simply because all travel earns 3X no longer reflects the current program.

Compare Chase Travel with direct bookings

Eligible purchases through Chase Travel currently earn 8X points, while eligible flights and hotels booked directly earn 4X.

The higher Chase Travel reward rate should be considered alongside other factors such as total price, cancellation terms, hotel or airline loyalty benefits and booking flexibility.

A higher points rate does not automatically mean a booking has the lowest total cost or provides the greatest overall value.

Remember how the $300 travel credit affects earning

Reserve currently provides an automatic $300 annual travel credit.

The portion of a qualifying travel purchase reimbursed by the credit does not earn Ultimate Rewards points. Once the annual credit has been exhausted, eligible purchases earn according to the applicable rewards category.

Use Points Boost selectively

A fixed 1.5-cent value is no longer the general Chase Travel redemption rule. A transition exception applies to Sapphire Reserve cardmembers who applied before June 23, 2025: points earned before October 26, 2025 remain eligible for 1.5X redemption through Chase Travel until October 26, 2027. For these points, Chase applies the higher eligible value between 1.5X and Points Boost.

Chase currently uses Points Boost to provide enhanced value on selected hotels and flights.

For eligible Sapphire Reserve Points Boost offers, points can currently be worth up to twice their standard Chase Travel redemption value.

Because Points Boost availability changes, cardholders can compare the points required for an eligible Points Boost booking with the cash price and other available redemption options before deciding how to use rewards.

Compare transfers before moving points

Sapphire Reserve cardholders can transfer eligible Ultimate Rewards points to participating airline and hotel loyalty programs.

A transfer does not automatically increase the value of the points. Award pricing, taxes, fees, availability and transfer ratios can all affect the final result.

Point transfers are generally final, so cardholders may want to confirm award availability before transferring a significant points balance.

Points do not expire while the account remains open

Ultimate Rewards points currently do not expire while the eligible account remains open.

However, points may be lost in certain circumstances described in the Rewards Program Agreement, including some account closures involving program misuse or fraudulent activity.

Combining eligible Ultimate Rewards points

Chase may allow eligible Ultimate Rewards points to be moved between qualifying Chase accounts according to current program rules.

This can allow points earned on another eligible Chase rewards card to be used through an account that provides access to Sapphire Reserve redemption or transfer features, when permitted by the current program terms.

Account ownership and household restrictions apply, so cardholders should review the Ultimate Rewards rules before combining points.

Use bonus categories for existing spending

A rewards strategy does not require increasing overall spending.

Consumers can instead identify purchases already included in their normal budget that qualify for accelerated categories such as dining, direct hotel bookings, direct airfare or Chase Travel.

Increasing spending solely to earn additional points can reduce or eliminate the financial value of the rewards, particularly if the balance results in interest charges.

Consider the annual fee in the overall calculation

The Sapphire Reserve currently has a $795 annual fee.

When evaluating points earned over a year, cardholders can also consider how much value they actually receive from benefits such as the $300 travel credit, lounge access, The Edit credits and other statement credits.

The maximum advertised value of a benefit is not the same as the amount of value every cardholder will receive.

Frequently asked questions

How many points does Sapphire Reserve earn on travel?

The current earning rate depends on how travel is purchased. Eligible Chase Travel purchases earn 8X, while eligible flights and hotels booked directly earn 4X. Other purchases generally earn according to the card's current rewards terms.

Does Sapphire Reserve still redeem at 1.5 cents per point through Chase Travel?

Yes, for eligible legacy points under Chase's transition rules. The fixed 1.5-cent value does not apply to every point balance. Check your account's eligible legacy-point balance and compare the value shown for the booking with available Points Boost offers.

Are transfers to airline and hotel programs always the highest-value option?

No. The value of a transfer depends on the loyalty program, award availability, taxes, fees, transfer ratio and alternative redemption options.

Do Sapphire Reserve points expire?

Ultimate Rewards points currently do not expire while the account remains open, subject to the Rewards Program Agreement.

Final considerations

Maximizing Sapphire Reserve points starts with using the current rewards structure rather than older assumptions about 3X travel or a fixed 1.5-cent Chase Travel redemption rate.

Cardholders can compare direct bookings, Chase Travel, Points Boost and transfer partners according to the actual cash price and points required for each transaction.
