Travel perks of Chase Sapphire Preferred
Last reviewed: September 2026. Travel benefits, rewards, fees and coverage terms may change. Review Chase's current card terms and Guide to Benefits before relying on a specific protection.
The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card includes travel rewards, statement credits and several travel protections. The card's travel benefits were expanded in June 2026, including the addition of Emergency Evacuation and Transportation coverage and a credit toward eligible trusted traveler programs.
These features can be relevant to travelers, but each benefit has specific eligibility requirements, limits and exclusions that should be understood before relying on the card during a trip.
5X points through Chase Travel
Sapphire Preferred currently earns 5X points on eligible travel purchases made through Chase Travel.
Other qualifying travel purchased outside Chase Travel generally earns 2X points.
A higher rewards rate does not necessarily mean that booking through a travel portal will always provide the lowest total cost. Travelers can also compare prices, cancellation terms and loyalty program treatment before booking.
$100 annual Chase Travel hotel credit
Cardholders can currently receive up to $100 in statement credits each account anniversary year for eligible hotel accommodations purchased through Chase Travel.
The first $100 in qualifying hotel purchases that receive this credit do not earn rewards points.
Points Boost for selected travel
Chase currently offers Points Boost promotions on selected hotels and flights through Chase Travel.
Eligible Sapphire Preferred Points Boost bookings can provide up to 1.5 times the standard point value on selected top-booked hotels and flights with participating airlines.
This is not a fixed enhancement on every travel booking. Points Boost availability and redemption values can change.
Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or NEXUS credit
Sapphire Preferred currently provides one statement credit of up to $120 every four years toward an eligible application fee for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck® or NEXUS when the qualifying fee is charged to the card.
Chase does not determine whether an applicant is approved for one of these government programs.
No foreign transaction fees
Chase currently does not charge foreign transaction fees on purchases made with the Sapphire Preferred Card.
Other potential international costs, including merchant currency conversion practices and travel-related expenses, remain separate considerations.
Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance
For qualifying covered situations, Chase currently provides reimbursement of up to $10,000 per covered traveler and $20,000 per trip for eligible prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses.
Covered situations can include certain illnesses, severe weather and other events defined by the Guide to Benefits.
Trip Delay Reimbursement
If eligible common-carrier travel is delayed for more than 12 hours or requires an overnight stay, Sapphire Preferred currently provides reimbursement of up to $500 per covered traveler for qualifying unreimbursed expenses such as meals and lodging.
Baggage Delay Insurance
When eligible baggage is delayed for more than six hours, the card currently provides reimbursement of up to $100 per day for up to five days for qualifying essential purchases such as clothing and toiletries.
Lost Luggage Reimbursement
Current coverage can reimburse up to $3,000 per covered traveler for qualifying checked or carry-on baggage that is lost, damaged or stolen during a covered trip.
Primary Auto Rental Coverage
Sapphire Preferred currently includes primary Auto Rental Coverage for eligible rentals when applicable requirements are met.
Chase currently provides reimbursement of up to $60,000 for covered theft and collision damage for most eligible rental vehicles with a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $125,000 or less.
The rental company's collision coverage generally must be declined and the applicable rental cost must be charged according to the benefit requirements.
This benefit is not comprehensive automobile insurance and does not cover every type of loss, liability or vehicle.
Emergency Evacuation and Transportation
Added to Sapphire Preferred in June 2026, Emergency Evacuation and Transportation coverage may provide up to $100,000 for eligible medical services and transportation when a covered traveler becomes injured or ill during a qualifying trip at least 100 miles from home and emergency evacuation is required.
This benefit should not be interpreted as comprehensive medical insurance. Eligibility requirements, covered expenses and exclusions apply.
Travel Accident Insurance
Eligible air, bus, train or cruise transportation paid according to the benefit requirements may qualify for up to $500,000 in accidental death or dismemberment coverage.
Travel and Emergency Assistance
Travel and Emergency Assistance Services can provide legal, medical and other referrals while traveling.
This is primarily an assistance and referral service. Cardholders remain responsible for costs charged by medical providers, attorneys, transportation companies or other third parties unless another applicable benefit provides coverage.
Airport lounge access is not a standard Preferred benefit
Complimentary Priority Pass membership or broad complimentary Chase Sapphire Lounge access is not currently listed as a standard benefit of the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card.
The Preferred Card should therefore not be promoted as providing airport lounge access unless Chase introduces a specific offer that explicitly provides that benefit.
Transfer points to travel partners
Eligible Ultimate Rewards points can be transferred to participating airline and hotel loyalty programs.
Most current partners use a 1:1 ratio, but World of Hyatt is transitioning to a 4:3 ratio for Sapphire Preferred.
Accounts opened before June 15, 2026 retain the previous Hyatt 1:1 ratio through September 30, 2026. Beginning October 1, 2026, those accounts also move to 4:3. Accounts opened on or after June 15, 2026 are already subject to 4:3.

Yes. Eligible rentals can currently receive primary coverage for qualifying theft and collision damage, subject to the Guide to Benefits and coverage limits.

The card includes specific travel protections, including Emergency Evacuation and Transportation coverage, but these benefits should not be described as comprehensive medical insurance. Coverage requirements, limits and exclusions apply.

Final considerations
The Sapphire Preferred currently combines travel rewards with several meaningful travel protections, but each benefit should be described according to its actual coverage rather than as a general promise of travel insurance or premium travel treatment.
The card currently has a $95 annual fee, so consumers can compare expected use of its travel credit, reward categories, protections and transfer partners against that recurring cost.
